For many years, not much was know about Migraine disease, including the fact that it is a disease. A phenomena as old as mankind is that when something isn't understood, it tends to be surrounded by myths and misconceptions. We need to dispel those myths...
Myth: Migraine is "just a bad headache."
Truth: Migraine is actually a genetic neurological disease that brings on episodes or "Migraine attacks." Some people who have Migraine attacks don't even get the headache phase of them. A headache is just one possible symptom
Myth: If a person doesn't have the visual aura, they're not having a Migraine attack.
Truth: The aura is one of four possible phases of a Migraine attack, and it's not necessary for all four to occur during a Migraine attack. Only 20-25% of Migraineurs actually experience the aura phase.
Myth: Only women get Migraines.
Truth: Although more women than men have Migraine disease, men are affected. 6-7% of men are affected by Migraine disease; 18% of women.
Myth: Migraines are painful and inconvenient, but harmless.
Truth: This is a big one and wrong in several ways!
- Migraine disease can be very debilitating to the point of being disabling. When severe, until an effective treatment regimen is achieved, some Migraineurs are unable to work, care for their families and homes, or even do simple things such as pick up their medications or shop for groceries.
- A prolonged Migraine attack can actually cause a stroke. When the headache of a Migraine lasts more than 72 hours with less than a solid four-hour pain-free period, while awake, it's termed Status Migrainous, and immediate medical care should be sought.
- There is mounting evidence that Migraine is a progressive brain disease that, in time, causes white matter lesions on the brain. Therefore, if a person has frequent Migraines, an effective preventive regimen is important.
